Piet Mondrian Chrysanthemums, 1900

Piet Mondrian began by painting flowers — and painted them one at a time, never in bouquets. Chrysanthemum dates from 1900, well before the primary colors and black lines that later made him famous. Its naturalism comes down from the Hague School and, behind that, the Barbizon painters of France: a single bloom on a long stem, worked in watercolor and charcoal against a warm brown ground.

“I was always a realist,” he wrote later. He came back to flowers around 1908, but swapped this earth-toned palette for something brighter and more artificial. Gallery-quality printing on premium 200gsm matte paper — thicker than a standard poster, and the color comes through with real depth.
